Return to your true self

Hi, I’m Audrey and I help couples and individuals with their relationships.

I see both couples and individuals online in South Carolina and New York. I also have an office in Greenville, South Carolina where I see individuals and couples in person. My clients often come in not knowing what to do or how to go about fixing things. Often, they feel they just don’t know what to do to make things better.

My Approach

My guess is that maybe you might also not know how to make things different in your life.

Maybe you feel hopeless or overwhelmed at times with all that you have on your plate and it’s a struggle to connect with others. Or maybe things with your marriage, family, friends, or work feel really disconnected and sometimes just excruciatingly painful. And maybe feelings of hopelessness or being stuck get in the way of your life much more than you would like. The metaphors of treading water or just trying to keep your head above the waves maybe fit for you too.

Clients I see are sometimes also not ready to tell anyone close to them the depth of what is going on inside of them. And maybe there really aren’t a lot of safe supportive people in your life at the moment. Yet, you know it’s important to be supported by someone else and you need to be able to process what is happening for you.

You want to feel good in your skin or in your most important relationships again.

And you want to feel like you are enough and that things are not going to fall apart. Maybe you don’t want to have thoughts of wanting to run away from your life anymore. You want to be present with those around you and it’s been a long time since you felt that way.

It is highly likely that you are also really good at being there for others but when it comes to others being there for you, you feel like no one is really there for you. You can show up for the people in your life but this isn’t always reciprocated. And you are tired of this being the case. But just don’t know what to do about it. And you need someone to be there for you to help you in this place that you find yourself in right now.

Therapy is the perfect place to find that support.

It is the perfect place to heal and unburden some of what you have been carrying. The concept of “True Self” is used a lot in my office. My clients and I talk about it around how they see themselves and their relationships. Knowing yourself and being known by others is vital for health and healing. And this process isn’t a simple or cliché “finding yourself”. I really like the way that Emily McDowell puts it:

'Finding yourself’ is not really how it works. You aren’t a ten-dollar bill in last winter’s coat pocket. You are also not lost. Your true self is right there, buried under cultural conditioning, other people’s opinions, and inaccurate conclusions you drew as a kid that became your beliefs about who you are. ‘Finding yourself’ is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hands on you.

—Emily McDowell

When clients I see are able to return to themselves they can find clarity, peace, and hope for themselves and their relationships.

My hope for you is that you would know this to be true and know that it is possible even if parts of you aren’t convinced or struggle to believe that any of this is true. That is understandable and part of where you are in the process right now in what you are going through. If you find yourself having any questions, hesitations, or concerns the best way to clear them up is to give me a call and let me answer them for you. I am happy to answer any questions you have about this process and make it as easy as possible to navigate. Also, if we find that I can’t help you with what you are looking for I can also give you referrals to other trusted therapists
